Thinking of buying a TV?

Confused by the technology?

Here is our quick overview:

Unless you are a bit of a TV enthusiast then you can be forgiven for being confused as to what you are buying when purchasing a TV.

LCD TV: CCFL:

All TVs until recently were backlit by what is known as CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent) lamps. This technology is now ageing and is being superseded by the more superior LED which you will find on more expensive sets, but you can still find this standard on the cheaper models.

LED TV: Direct LED

LED TVs are backlit by LEDs (light emitting diodes) which are positioned behind the screen. LED TVS enable localised dimming which means that adjacent brightness and darkness are displayed more effectively so you get greater contrast. LED TVs are more power efficient

LED TV: Edge LED (LCD):

These are LED TVS that have the LEDS mounted along the edge of the panel and so you will find that your TV will have a slender display. You will find that you won’t get quite the picture quality that the Direct LED TVs offer

Plasma TV:

PDP (plasma display panel) TVs use glass screens that contain millions of tiny cells that are filled with inert gases. Electricity then excites the gases and causes them to illuminate the pixels across the screen. You will find that plasma is superior to LCD but is really only viable on screens that are over 42 inches. A lot of manufacturers have now dropped this technology

3D TV:

As the name suggests you can buy LCD, LED or Plasma screens that display your picture in 3D. There are two types of 3D picture; Passive and Active

Passive 3D uses polarised filters and you have to use cheap plastic glasses like in the cinema.

Active 3D creates a 3D effect by synchronising fast-shutting glasses with infared transmitters.
